What are Primitive Reflexes?

As babies, we are born with primitive reflexes that help us develop in the first year of life. These reflexes help us move efficiently, eat, and thrive. Primitive reflexes help our brain to develop optimally and they are extremely important to the sensory systems in our body. When these reflexes do not develop well, there can be a variety of symptoms from sensory and behavioral issues to physical movement difficulties.

Many kids struggle with primitive reflexes and our goal at Be Well is to help children develop a strong neurological foundation – and it starts with primitive reflexes.

Our intensive program focuses on re-engaging these primitive reflexes and helping kids with:

  • behavioral difficulties
  • involuntary movements
  • eye tracking dysfunctions
  • learning delays
  • cognitive delays
  • traumatic brain injuries
  • developmental coordination disorder
  • and more.

Check out the video below for a brief introduction to primitive reflexes and why they are foundational for healthy development and function.

What is an "Intensive"?

Intensives consist of 4 consecutive hours of treatment in the office on consecutive days.

For example, if your child needs 8 total hours of treatment, we will do 2 consecutive days of 4-hour treatments. If they need 12 total hours of treatment, we will do 3 consecutive days of 4-hour treatments. If they need 16 total hours of treatment, we will do 4 consecutive days of 4-hour treatments.

During the 4-hour sessions, we will work on remediating the primitive reflexes they exhibited during testing, which includes exercises where Dr Savage will be moving their body, kids will be moving their own body, or a combination of both. Also included in treatment are:

  • oxygen therapy
  • laser therapy
  • core stability
  • eye movement therapy
  • balance work
  • other types of therapies as indicated by the child’s testing.

Intensive Program Information

We begin with 90 minutes for an initial testing visit to assess what level of program intensive the child needs.

In general, initial intensives require between 8-16 hours of treatment. This is based on the results of the tests we will perform in office during the initial visit. We do not charge by the modality or different therapies provided during the treatment, instead we charge per hour. This keeps costs down for you, as all the therapies we pack into the intensive treatment, if billed individually, would cost much more.

Some children may need more than one intensive. This will be determined after their initial intensive treatment. Lab testing may be indicated, depending on each individual child’s presentation and/or response to treatment. This will be an additional fee.

What to expect:

When you call or text our office to begin your application, you’ll be sent all the necessary paperwork on an online patient portal.
This paperwork must be filled out completely in order to qualify to schedule the initial testing visit. Our office staff will reach out to get you scheduled and take your $100 deposit at that time.

Phone consultations are available if you have additional questions beyond the scope of this newsletter. They can be scheduled by calling or texting 503-217-4457, are 15 minutes in length, and cost $100.

Considerations:

For the initial testing visit, children should be seen prior to taking any medications for behavior, such as Adderall or Ritalin as these can mask symptoms during testing.

Patients must commit to being gluten and dairy free for 2 weeks prior to beginning treatment, and continue to be for the duration of the treatment period, including the home exercise portion after the intensive, which will be 4-6 weeks in duration.
*Be well offers nutrition services that may be covered by insurance to help navigate this commitment.
