The treatment

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal. A tiny probe is inserted into each hair follicle and a controlled electrical current disables future growth. Because hair grows in cycles, multiple sessions are needed for complete removal and long-term results.

  • Works on all hair colors
  • Works on all skin types
  • Provides permanent removal
  • Supports gender-affirming surgery preparation
  • Can be used when laser isn't effective or recommended

What to expect

Electrolysis is gradual; results build over time. Plans vary by area, hair density, hormones, surgery timelines, and goals.

Preparing

Save 3–5 days of hair growth, hydrate well, avoid caffeine if sensitive, OTC pain support if appropriate, topical lidocaine for sensitive areas.

Aftercare

Keep treated area clean, avoid sun and tanning, no makeup for 24 hours, don't scratch healing skin. Mild redness or scabbing resolves in days.

Be Well Holistic Health offers gender-affirming electrolysis with a focus on accessibility, body autonomy, and clear pathways to care.

OHP Coverage

OHP covers electrolysis when medically necessary for gender-affirming care and gender dysphoria. A referral from your primary care provider (PCP) is required — and we can help if you don't already have one.

Our naturopathic team — Dr. Maria Reebs and Dr. Michelle Ritola — can provide gender-affirming evaluations and referrals when appropriate.

🛡

Private Insurance

Some private insurance plans have begun covering electrolysis for conditions such as PCOS and hormone-related hair growth. Coverage varies by plan.

For private insurance clients, payment is typically due at the time of service, and Morgan can provide a superbill for reimbursement.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is electrolysis covered by OHP in Oregon?
Yes. OHP may cover electrolysis when medically necessary for gender-affirming care and gender dysphoria. A referral from your primary care provider (PCP) is required for OHP coverage. If you don't already have a referral, we can help. Be Well's naturopathic doctors — Dr. Maria Reebs and Dr. Michelle Ritola — provide gender-affirming evaluations and can issue referrals for medically necessary electrolysis when appropriate.
Does Medicaid cover electrolysis for gender affirmation?
Often, yes. Many Oregon Health Plan (OHP / Medicaid) members can access insurance-covered electrolysis for gender-affirming care, including surgery preparation and treatment related to gender dysphoria.
Do I need a gender dysphoria diagnosis for insurance coverage?
For OHP-covered electrolysis related to gender-affirming surgery preparation, gender dysphoria remains the diagnosis typically required for insurance approval and referral authorization. If you do not already have documentation or a referral, our naturopathic doctors provide gender-affirming evaluations and can help determine eligibility.
Is electrolysis permanent?
Yes. Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal. A tiny probe is inserted into each hair follicle and a controlled electrical current disables future growth.
How many sessions will I need?
Electrolysis is a gradual process. Plans vary depending on treatment area, hair density, hormonal influences, surgery timelines, and individual goals. Morgan develops an individualized plan during your consultation.
Does electrolysis hurt?
Sensitivity varies. Many people find treatment manageable with good hydration, avoiding caffeine, topical lidocaine if desired, and OTC pain support when appropriate. Morgan is known for a gentle, collaborative, trauma-informed approach.
Can it be used for surgery preparation?
Yes. Electrolysis is commonly used for vaginoplasty, vulvoplasty, and phalloplasty preparation — including penile shaft clearance, scrotum and perineum preparation, donor site preparation, and surgeon-specific mapping.
Does it work on all hair and skin types?
Yes. Unlike laser, electrolysis works on all hair colors and all skin types. It may be especially helpful for people who are resistant to or not good candidates for laser treatment.
What if laser doesn't work for me?
Electrolysis may still be an excellent option. Many people pursue electrolysis because laser was ineffective, their hair type is not laser-responsive, or they want permanent removal regardless of hair color or skin tone.
What is aftercare like?
Keep the treated area clean, avoid sun exposure and tanning, avoid makeup on the treated area for 24 hours, and don't scratch healing skin. Temporary redness, swelling, or small scabs usually resolve within a few days.
Who should avoid electrolysis?
Electrolysis is generally not recommended during pregnancy, and some people with significant unmanaged heart, nerve, or skin conditions may require additional medical guidance. Morgan can help determine whether treatment is appropriate.
Is Be Well accepting new clients?
Yes — Morgan is accepting new clients and currently has availability. Sessions take place at 3125 NE Holladay St, Portland, OR. Text or call 503-217-4457 to schedule.
